What do you do?

I have absolutely no clue how many times I’ve had to answer this question. A good friend of mine responds to this with a clarification request: “you mean, for work? For fun?” This usually throws people off for a split second but are quick to reply: “for work.” Most of us have a prepared answer for when we’re asked this. Every career oriented person should have a one line sentence clearly explaining what it is they do professionally. But there’s a tougher, better question that hardly ever gets thrown around.

Why do you do what you do?

This is a harder question to answer because most of us aren’t totally in touch with why we spend our days like we do. As a business owner, it’s especially important to have a clear understanding of what drives you. Finding your “why” is how you’ll find and keep the best talent, it’s how you’ll grow a business based on loyalty. It’s how you’ll be able to keep your focus even when things are at their most challenging. It’s what keeps you on your heart driven path.

Finding your “why” will help you shape your life outside of work, too. It’s how you’ll always stay on track with fitness goals and other personal ambitions. Knowing your reasons for meditating each day or getting out of town on the weekends will keep you on track even as distractions try to interfere.

If you’re solid in your reasons for why you do what you do, you’ll have support come from all around. As Simon Sinek says repeatedly in the video below: People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. Want to become an influential leader in your world?
